Transdev is looking for a intern as Data Analyst in Transport (H/F)
1. Information about the company
As an operator and global integrator of mobility, Transdev – The mobility company – empowers freedom to move everyday thanks to safe, reliable and innovative solutions that serve the common good. We are proud to provide 11 million passenger trips on average everyday thanks to efficient, easy to use and environmentally-friendly transportation services that connect people and communities. Our approach is rooted in long-term partnerships with businesses and public authorities, and in the relentless pursuit of the safest and most innovative mobility solutions. We are a team of people serving people, and mobility is what we do. Transdev is jointly held by Caisse des Dépôts Group (66%) and the Rethmann Group (34%).Transdev Hannover GmbH is a regional subsidiary of the Transdev Group in Germany. With effect from June 12th, 2022, Transdev Hannover has been the operator for the entire S-Bahn Hannover network, including connections from Nienburg and Celle in the north to Minden in the west, Hildesheim in the east and Paderborn in the south. The network covers a total of around 9.3 million train kilometers per year.
2.Roadmap
The Flirt 3XL electric multiple unit (EMU) trainsets from Stadler operated in the S-Bahn Hannover network are equipped with an on-board energy measurement and management system (EMMS). The system provides the measurement data used for energy billing and management. These data are transmitted directly to the traction power network operator via remote data transmission for energy billing. The measuring system records the active, reactive, and regenerative energy separately in each case (Figure 1: Block diagram of the EMMS).
The EMMS consists of three main modules:
The ECOMeter captures the measurements of the active, reactive and regenerative energy the
EMU consumes and simultaneously enables the transmission of information about the line
voltage to the line input power converter units of the EMU. In accordance with EN 50463-1, the
measuring device ensures the following functionalities:
- Voltage Measurement Function (VMF)
- Current Measurement Function (CMF)
- Energy Calculation Function (ECF)
- Energy Measurement Function (EMF)
• The ECOBox receives the voltage and current measurements from the ECOMeter and converts
them into analog signals according to the requirements of the line input power converter unit. In
addition, the ECOBox monitors all relevant safety functions, such as the detection of short
circuits.
• ECOCom receives, generates and stores the data required for the energy measurements. Its
main function is to prepare and transmit the required information, i.e. the compiled energy billing
data to the landside, which records the energy consumption based on the received measurement
information.
In addition to the data transmission to the traction power network operator, the energy data are also
transmitted to the operator of the EMU (Transdev) every hour. All data entries are provided with a
geo location and a time stamp. The energy data include the following parameters:
• GPS-coordinates
• Date and time
• Active energy consumption [kWh]
• Reactive energy consumption [kWh]
• Regenerative energy fed back into the grid [kWh]
In addition, for each data record, the vehicle diagnostics system transmits further parameters describing the operating status of the vehicle. These include:
• Velocity [km/h]
• T-pressure on bogie 1-4 [bar]
• Occupancy capacity [%]
• Total mileage [km]
• Idle mode 1 active [0;1]
• Idle mode 2 active [0;1]
• Heating active [0;1]
• Cooling active [0;1]
• Main switch [0;1]
One data set covers an interval of one hour, the data resolution is one minute. The data are provided to a Transdev server twice a day by each vehicle in a machine-readable format (*.csv).
5. Mission
At Transdev, there is a need to develop a procedure to make the daily transmitted energy data from the EMMS and the status data from the operation of the EMU (raw data) more easily accessible to the various business departments of Transdev using various methods and statistical analysis procedures and further calculation methods.
The new information and insights gained from this evaluation on a daily basis shall be used to derive approaches for optimizing energy consumption and to illustrate interactions with the various operating states of the EMU. The information shall be made available to the respective target group in the form of figures, metrics or data visualizations such as diagrams or dashboards.
To achieve the objective, a multi-stage approach is necessary:
5.1. Definining the objectives and planning of the analysis
In the first stage, the questions and desired key figures shall be defined, which are meant to be answered by the data analysis. For this purpose, the requirements of the various departments with regard to all essential information and key figures must be gathered and validated in a requirements catalogue.
5.2. Planning and implementation of data preparation
The data shall first of all be conditioned and converted into the correct format and cleaned for the subsequent data analysis. For this purpose, the requirements as well as the technical and organizational measures needed for further processing and analysis of the raw data, shall be recorded and implemented in cooperation with data experts of the Transdev IT department.
5.3. Implementation of the data analysis
The data are to be evaluated using various calculation methods and statistical analysis procedures. The methods used are derived from the previously defined objectives. It can be assumed that several analysis procedures and methods may have to be combined with each other in order to obtain the requested results.
The methods used should also enable further "ad-hoc analyses", so that additional specific analyses can be created and visually processed in a short time and without big effort.
5.4. Data visualization
The results of the data analysis shall then be visualized. The visualizations of the analysis results provide all required information and important information is highlighted. Furthermore, in case of deviations, the visualizations allow to derive necessary measures to be taken.
Data visualizations are created as interactive and dynamic dashboards by using a commonly used software (e.g. MS PowerBI).
