In cooperation with the department of Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the "Joining and Cutting" department. 

Aim of this thesis: As part of your thesis you will investigate interconnection combinations of Al/Cu/Ni:

Batteries or battery modules are central components in a variety of energy storage applications. The pouch cell is gaining in importance due to its high packing density and is one of the most important cell types on the current market. Due to its high precision and fast cycle time, laser beam welding is the preferred joining process for cell contacting of pouch cells in module assembly. 

What you will do

  • Researching / recording the state of the art
  • Planning and realisation of laser welding tests
  • Process investigation for laser welding of Ni-based materials
  • Optional: Carrying out tests at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY)

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, materials science or a comparable degree program
  • Interest in laser material processing in application-oriented research
