At the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG, we conduct research in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy and sector coupling for a successful energy transition. Based at seven different locations spread throughout Germany, we pursue applied research to develop innovative technologies for our clients from public agencies and private enterprises, with the ultimate objective of transferring innovation into marketable products and processes.
Our team at Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG is developing advanced heat pump controllers to enhance energy infrastructure resilience. We aim to strategically integrate these advanced controls into the German Heat Pump Infrastructure. To support this initiative, we are seeking a working student with a strong understanding of heat pump technologies and their integration into energy systems, as well as knowledge in geographic information systems (GIS). The ideal candidate should have a keen interest in data analysis, clustering techniques, and simulation modeling for evaluating key performance indicators (KPIs) in energy systems.
What you will do
- Assist in Identifying the potential input data for categorizing the regions of whole Germany where heat pumps should be integrated.
- Support defining the metrics used for clustering.
- Explore various clustering techniques, including artificial intelligence (AI).
- Develop and generate clusters for different distribution grids across Germany.
What you bring to the table
- You are pursuing a degree in fields of engineering, energy management, physics, computer science, applied mathematics or comparable courses of study
- Knowledge in heating infrastructures of Germany
- Understanding in heat pump technologies
- Interest in energy infrastructures, in particular the integration of heat pumps in sector coupled systems.
- Programming skills in Python
- Confident handling of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point)
- Familiarity with Clustering Techniques
- Support in the extension of existing simulation models
