The quantum technology group at the Institute of Physics of the University of Rostock is performing research on quantum sensors and their application. Much of the work in the group is focused on the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, a color defect in diamond which can serve as an atomically small magnetic field sensor.

The group is presently seeking a new PhD student (m/f/d) to join our team. The person hired shall spearhead a line of research concerned with spin-light-interaction at cryogenic temperatures. This research will be based on a recent result of our group (Irber et al., Nature Communications 12, 532 (2021)) where we have demonstrated a novel technique to read out spin qubits with orders of magnitude higher efficiency and speed than established approaches.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

  • research in the field of experimental physics with the aim of scientific qualification (doctorate qualification)
  • setup of a new closed-cycle cryostat for microwave-optical spectroscopy
  • use of highly efficient spin readout for magnetic resonance spectroscopy on single molecules
  • improvement of laser protocols for spin readout and spin polarization on defect centers and organic molecules
  • discovery of novel spin qubits, based on organic fluorophore molecules encapsulated into hexagonal boron nitride

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in a STEM subject, preferably physics, with preferably good results
  • strong background in quantum-optical laboratory experiments, e.g. in design and construction of optical and microwave setups
  • ideally explicit expertise on defect center spectroscopy and quantum sensing
  • excellent academic track record
  • willingness to work seriously and with commitment on a project of one's own scientific qualification
  • ability to cooperate in a diverse team and in an interdisciplinary environment
  • willingness to investigate scientific questions in depth and search for fundamental understanding of phenomena

WE AS AN EMPLOYER:

Equal opportunities are important to us. We welcome applications from suitable severely disabled people or people from traditionally underrepresented groups. We aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore encourage suitably qualified women to apply. We welcome applications from people of other nationalities or with a migration background.

WE OFFER YOU:

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The experience level is determined individually, taking into account your previous professional experience.

The temporal limitation of the employment relationship is based on § 2 (1) Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.
