Industries worldwide – from flower growers to textile manufacturers – need energy for their manufacturing operations. As energy prices rise and the supply of predominantly fossil fuel-based energy sources becomes increasingly unstable, the appeal of captive renewable energy solutions grows.
Coordinated and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the German Energy Solutions Initiative promotes the global dissemination of technologies and expertise in climate-friendly energy. Decades of support for sustainable energy innovations have established a successful German industry known for its top-tier technologies. The initiative is based on continuous collaboration with the German business sector.
As part of this initiative, the Project Development Programme (PDP), implemented by GIZ, operates at the intersection of development cooperation and private-sector engagement at the local level. The PDP team works with local commercial and industrial companies in selected developing countries to pre-develop climate-friendly energy projects. The focus is on photovoltaic, battery storage, energy efficiency, process heat, and green hydrogen. It provides free and neutral advice to local companies, facilitates connections with solution providers registered under the German Energy Solutions Initiative, and promotes market development through trainings, studies, and reference projects. Thus, the project contributes to economic development as well as global economic relations and contribute to climate change mitigation.

During the internship, you will support the project team with both organisational and content-related tasks, including:

  • Content Creation & Reference Projects: Assist in creating impact content by preparing success stories, collecting data and visuals for reference projects, setting up and managing an image archive, and contributing to project displays and modular PowerPoint slides
  • Formal Quality Check for Studies and Analyses: Support the final quality control of studies and sector analyses, ensuring compliance with methodological and formatting standards; assist in preparing materials for publication and marketing
  • Political, Legal Research & Country Profiles: Conduct research on political and legal frameworks relevant to the project’s partner countries, supporting country teams in maintaining detailed country profiles that capture key data, contextual insights, and recent developments
  • Internal Communication: Maintain project intranet pages, assist with intranet news, and support the establishment of communication guidelines and standards by researching best practices, gathering feedback from local teams, and organising these into clear documents
  • Visual & Content Streamlining: Assist in updating materials, including slides, documents, and templates, by improving layouts, wording, and visuals; ensure consistency across formats, manage content and visual assets, and provide feedback for design and content improvements
  • Editorial Planning & Monitoring: Assist with editorial scheduling, ensuring team members meet deadlines, and provide preparation support; support the team with communication monitoring and reporting
  • General Project Management Support: Contribute to the day-to-day management of the project by helping with planning, monitoring, and coordinating activities in collaboration with team members
  • You have completed your Bachelor's degree and/or are currently studying for a Master's degree in political science, engineering, economics or related field and you already had initial experiences with renewable energies and/or energy efficiency
  • Strong communication skills with external stakeholders and service-oriented, especially regarding the organisation and coordination of different event formats as well as their administrative workload
  • Overview of different renewable energy technologies (especially photovoltaics) and their basic business models; furthermore, you are familiar with different political approaches to promote renewable energies
  • Knowledge in the fields of energy efficiency, process heat or hydrogen decentralised electrification and industrial self-consumption is desirable; as the project works closely with German renewable energy and energy efficiency companies and the relevant industry associations, knowledge of the industry structure is an advantage
  • Previous experience in financial modelling of renewable energy projects is an advantage
  • Very good Microsoft 365 skills (Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote)
  • Very good German (C2) and English (C1) skills are necessary for internal and external communication; additional knowledge of French is an advantage
